Aftercare Instructions Following a Dental Filling

When to Contact Our Office - Please call/text us at 201-433-8600 if you experience:

  • A bite that feels uneven or “high”

  • Persistent pain or discomfort

  • Sensitivity that does not improve

  • Any concerns or questions about your treatment

Anesthesia (Numbness)

If anesthesia was used during your procedure, your lips, teeth, and tongue may remain numb for several hours.

  • Avoid eating or chewing until the numbness has completely worn off

  • Be careful not to bite your cheek, lips, or tongue

  • Avoid hot foods or beverages while numb to prevent burns

  • If numbness persists longer than expected or into the following day, please contact our office.

Composite (White) Fillings

  • If you received anesthesia: wait until numbness wears off before chewing

  • If no anesthesia was used: you may eat immediately after your appointment

  • Your filling is fully hardened before you leave the office

Sensitivity or Soreness

  • It is normal to experience temporary sensitivity to hot, cold, sweets, or pressure after a filling.

  • Mild discomfort should improve within a few days

  • If sensitivity to pressure or biting lasts longer than 1–2 days, please contact us immediately

  • For sore gums: rinse 3 times daily with warm salt water
(1 teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of warm water)

  • Over-the-counter pain medication may be used as needed

Oral Hygiene

  • Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for the longevity of your filling:

  • Brush at least twice daily

  • Floss once daily

  • Keep up with regular dental cleanings and exams

Most patients benefit from cleanings every 6 months, but your doctor may recommend more frequent visits based on your individual needs.
